Sophie woke up at 5:47 AM asking if Santa came yet. I know this because she whispered it directly into my ear while I was dead asleep. Theo responded to all the excitement by eating a substantial portion of the wrapping paper from his first present.

The pediatric nurse in me knows he’ll be fine. The mom in me is googling “baby ate wrapping paper” at 6 AM on Christmas.

Marcus and I somehow managed to exchange gifts at midnight like we’re living in some rom-com, despite the fact that we were both running on three hours of sleep and I was wearing milk-stained pajamas. His gift to me: new running shoes that I desperately needed. My gift to him: not completely losing it when Theo woke up at 4 AM wanting to “practice Christmas.”

Sophie is absolutely magical at this age - old enough to understand Santa but still young enough to believe completely. She lined up all her new toys by size and announced she was going to “organize Christmas.” Meanwhile Theo discovered that wrapping paper makes an excellent snack and I discovered that two kids under six on Christmas morning requires the energy of approximately twelve adults.

We’re currently in that post-present haze where the living room looks like a tornado hit a toy store, Sophie is playing with the boxes more than the actual gifts, and Theo is napping in a pile of tissue paper. Merry Christmas to us - tired, grateful, and somehow still standing.
