We had big plans for Valentine’s Day. Candlelit dinner at home after Sophie went to bed. Wine. Actual conversation without someone asking for goldfish crackers. Romance.

Then Sophie decided bedtime was optional and that she absolutely NEEDED to join our dinner party. She squeezed herself between our chairs, announced she was “very hungry for cake,” and proceeded to eat Marcus’s entire slice of chocolate dessert while maintaining eye contact.

Marcus just laughed and got himself another piece. This is why I keep him. Happy Valentine’s Day to all the parents out there who are learning that romance looks a little different these days. At least the wine was good.

PS - Sophie’s in a tutu because obviously Valentine’s Day requires fancy dress. Some things never change.
