Marcus turned 27 today and honestly, watching him get equally excited about Sophie’s crayon masterpiece and my slightly lopsided birthday cake might be the most dad thing he’s ever done. The man studied that card like it was the Rosetta Stone, asking Sophie to explain every scribble while she bounced around in her tutu giving him the full artistic commentary.

I attempted a chocolate cake from scratch because I’m apparently a glutton for punishment. It tastes fine but looks like it survived a small earthquake. Marcus took one bite and declared it “the best cake ever” with the kind of genuine enthusiasm that made me remember why I married this nerd in the first place.

Sophie insisted on wearing her tutu for daddy’s special day, and honestly, if someone loved my art enough to display it on the fridge with that much pride, I’d probably wear a tutu too. Twenty-seven looks good on him, even if his hair is already going gray at the temples. My favorite old man.
