Christmas morning with a six-month-old is basically watching someone discover that wrapping paper is the ultimate toy. Sophie has completely ignored the carefully chosen presents and decided that crinkly red paper is the most fascinating thing on earth.

Marcus spent forty-five minutes assembling her first big toy - some elaborate activity table thing - and there are definitely two extra screws sitting on the coffee table. He swears the manual was wrong, I swear he just doesn’t follow directions. Either way, Sophie couldn’t care less about it right now.

Meanwhile, I’m in the kitchen making tamales from Abuela Rosa’s recipe for the first time completely on my own. Only called Mom three times, which I’m counting as a victory. The kitchen smells like Christmas and childhood, and I can hear Marcus narrating to Sophie about why we don’t eat wrapping paper. She’s not listening.

Merry Christmas from our beautifully chaotic little family. Next year she’ll probably be more interested in the boxes than the toys. Baby logic is the best logic.
