I don’t know where this year went. One minute I was holding a tiny baby who did nothing but sleep and eat, and now I’m chasing a toddler who thinks dinosaurs are the answer to every question and that stairs are a personal challenge.

We celebrated with chocolate cake, which was clearly a mistake. Theo treated it less like food and more like a full-body art project. The face-plant into the frosting was inevitable — the boy has never met a food he wouldn’t wear. Sophie was supposed to help him open presents but ended up opening them all herself because “he’s doing it wrong, Mama.” She’s not wrong. His technique needs work.

He toddles, he falls, he toddles again

But watching him take those wobbly first steps across the kitchen today, chocolate still smeared on his cheeks, grinning like he’d just conquered Everest — this is what one looks like. One year of chaos and drooly kisses and that plastic T-Rex that goes literally everywhere with us now. One year of learning that two kids is exponentially harder than one, but also exponentially more wonderful.

Happy birthday to our dinosaur-obsessed, cake-covered, perfect little tornado. Here’s to year two being slightly less messy. (Who am I kidding? It’s going to be worse.)
