Sophie came home from preschool today with another masterpiece, and I swear she’s getting better every week. What started as random scribbles six months ago are now actual recognizable things - flowers with petals, houses with doors, stick figures that actually look like people.

Marcus keeps saying she gets it from him, pointing to his art degree like it means something when he spends his days designing websites. But watching her concentrate on getting the colors just right, the way she holds her tongue between her teeth when she’s really focused - I see both of us in there.

I’ve been saving all her best pieces in a folder, and today we spread them out on the kitchen island for a proper retrospective. She was so proud pointing out each one, telling me the stories behind the purple dog and the house with seven chimneys. At three years old, she already knows when she’s created something special.

The fridge is running out of space, but I can’t bring myself to take any of them down. Every crayon stroke feels like watching her little personality emerge, one drawing at a time.
