Theo immediately started vibrating with excitement, appearing with his magnifying glass and launching into a detailed explanation of what bugs we might find. Marcus looked at me like I’d suggested we climb Everest before lunch. Sophie treated it like I’d personally ruined her weekend.

But did I let their lack of enthusiasm deter me? Absolutely not. I’m still in my ‘we’re doing family activities and we’re going to like it’ era.

Twenty minutes later, we still hadn’t made it out the door. Biscuit had somehow managed to tangle himself in his own leash, Theo was examining ‘specimens’ on the kitchen floor, and Sophie was documenting her suffering for her Snapchat story.

Update: We eventually made it outside. Theo found seventeen different bugs. Sophie took forty-three selfies. Marcus carried the backpack without complaint. Biscuit ate something he definitely shouldn’t have. I call it a win.
