The Secret Laboratory
So Marcus went to the garage this afternoon to grab his toolbox and came back with the most bewildered expression I’ve ever seen.

The Secret Laboratory
Turns out our eleven-year-old has been conducting some serious entomological research right under our noses.

The evidence
The workbench that Marcus uses for his various abandoned hobbies has been completely transformed into Theo’s bug laboratory. We’re talking dozens of jars, each one carefully labeled in his distinctive crayon handwriting: “Cool Beetle,” “Fuzzy Caterpillar,” “Scary But Nice Spider.” The kid has been methodical about this - holes poked in every lid, different leaves and twigs for each habitat. It’s actually pretty impressive.

The explanation
What started as Marcus being mildly horrified quickly turned into genuine fascination. Theo gave him the full tour, explaining where he found each specimen and what he’s learned about their behaviors. I love watching Marcus with the kids - he gets just as excited about their passions as they do.

They’re already making plans for a proper terrarium setup, because apparently we’re leaning into this now.
I should probably be concerned about the fact that my son has been secretly collecting insects for who knows how long, but honestly? The attention to detail, the scientific curiosity, the pure joy on his face when he talks about his “discoveries” - I’m just proud. Though we definitely need to establish some ground rules about indoor vs. outdoor specimens.
