Fourteen and Fearless

Fourteen and Fearless

Sophie Grace Hartwell turned fourteen today and I’m having feelings about it.

Fourteen and Fearless

Fourteen and Fearless

Look at her. Just look at this confident, gorgeous, eye-rolling teenager who borrowed my shirt without asking and somehow makes it look better than I do. When did this happen? When did my baby become this person who knows exactly who she is and isn’t apologizing for it?

I keep staring at these photos Marcus took this morning and seeing myself at her age - except I wasn’t this sure of myself at fourteen. Or twenty-four. Or honestly, thirty-four.

The signature Sophie eye-roll has been perfected

Sophie has this thing I spent years trying to find - she takes up space without apology. She walks into a room like she belongs there. She speaks up in class. She wears what she wants. She exists loudly and beautifully and it’s everything I wished I’d been brave enough to do.

The resemblance is getting scary, according to literally everyone who sees us together.

Same bone structure, same stubborn streak, same way of tilting our heads when we’re thinking. But where I second-guessed everything at her age, she just… doesn’t. She’s raising the bar for confident teenage energy and I’m here for all of it.

Happy fourteenth birthday to my mini-me who’s actually the better version. Keep being exactly who you are, mija. The world needs more Sophie energy.
