Five Years Ago Today

I can’t believe it’s been five years since I walked down the aisle toward this man who started crying before I even made it halfway. The Merrimon-Wynne House, 127 of our favorite people, perfect 68-degree October weather that felt like the universe was on our side. Carmen as my maid of honor telling me to stop fixing my hair, Derek as best man probably making jokes to calm Marcus’s nerves.

And then there was our flower girl – sixteen-month-old Sophie, who Abuela Rosa carried most of the way down the aisle because walking was still more of a suggestion than a skill. She mostly crawled and looked confused, but she was perfect. The vows were beautiful – his were funnier, mine were more sincere, and we’ll argue about this forever. But the moment that still makes me laugh? When he stepped on my dress during our first dance and we both just lost it. Couldn’t stop laughing long enough to finish the song.

Tonight we put on our wedding clothes (yes, they still fit, thank you very much) and danced in the kitchen while Sophie clapped from her perch on the counter. Five years, one house, a million small moments, and I’d marry this nerd all over again. Even if he’d probably step on my dress again.

Here’s to the next five years of beautiful disasters and perfect imperfections.
