Two years ago today, this little hurricane entered our world and immediately made it louder, messier, and infinitely more wonderful. Theo’s second birthday was everything I expected: dinosaur-themed chaos with a side of chocolate disaster.

We went full dinosaur for the party, obviously. Green streamers, plastic T-Rexes, and a cake shaped like a triceratops that took me way too long to make. Sophie helped with the decorating, which means there were sprinkles in places sprinkles should never be. But Theo was in heaven, running around roaring and explaining to anyone who would listen that “dis is a STEGOSAURUS!” (It was a triceratops, but we didn’t correct him.)

The cake moment was pure Hartwell tradition. Just like Sophie did at her second birthday, Theo decided the most efficient way to eat cake was face-first. One minute he was sitting on Marcus’s lap, the next minute he was literally diving into the chocolate frosting. I’m pretty sure it’s genetic at this point – we just don’t do cake with any kind of dignity in this family.

Marcus spent the next twenty minutes picking chocolate out of Theo’s hair while Sophie declared it “the best birthday ever” and immediately asked when we could do it again. Theo, covered in frosting and grinning like a maniac, just kept saying “MORE CAKE!” We’re still finding chocolate fingerprints on random surfaces. Worth every sticky second.
