So this is what Christmas morning looks like at the Hartwells: Sophie and I in coordinated cream sweaters because we’re that mom-daughter duo now, Theo giving us detailed paleontological analysis of why T-Rex would have been terrible at wrapping presents, and Marcus behind the camera documenting every beautiful, chaotic second of it.

Theo managed to turn every single gift into a dinosaur teaching moment. “Mom, did you know Triceratops lived in herds so they probably would have shared Christmas presents?” Like yes, mijo, that’s definitely what they would have done.

Meanwhile, Biscuit decided that ALL the presents were obviously meant for him and helped himself accordingly. We’re still finding bits of wrapping paper in his fur.

People ask me all the time how we do holidays with two kids and a dog and full-time jobs, like there’s some secret formula. The secret is: we don’t do Pinterest Christmas. We do Hartwell Christmas. And Hartwell Christmas involves someone crying (usually me when I step on a Lego barefoot), someone explaining dinosaurs at inappropriate times (always Theo), and someone looking absolutely gorgeous in every photo even when there’s chaos happening two feet away (that would be Sophie and me, obviously).

Our Christmas morning is never going to be the peaceful, magazine-worthy scene some families manage. It’s going to be loud and messy and full of dog hair and dinosaur facts. It’s going to be exactly what we are: beautifully imperfect and perfectly ours. Merry Christmas from our chaotic little corner of Apex. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
