Christmas was different this year. Smaller. Quieter. And maybe that’s exactly what we all needed.

No rushing from house to house, no massive family gatherings, no stress about being somewhere else by noon. Just us, in our pajamas until 2 PM, watching the kids discover their gifts at their own pace. Sophie got her first iPhone (I’m thrilled for her and absolutely terrified for my sanity), Marcus got some fancy keyboard parts he’s been wanting, and Theo got approximately seventeen new dinosaur books. Biscuit wore antlers and acted like it was his birthday.

The house was a mess of wrapping paper and joy, and nobody cared about getting dressed or making a big production out of anything. We made pancakes when we felt like it, watched movies, and Theo read dinosaur facts out loud for two straight hours.

This is what I want to remember about 2020 Christmas. Not what we couldn’t do, but how good it felt to just be home together. Simple might be my new favorite.
