So this is happening. Sophie’s officially a 5th grader and Theo’s officially a kindergartner, and they’re both officially sitting on my couch staring at screens.

The “first day of school” photo shoot was… different this year. Usually we’re standing by the front door with backpacks and forced smiles. This year it’s laptops and iPads and me trying to explain to Theo why he can’t bring his dinosaurs to show-and-tell through the computer.

Theo’s enthusiasm for virtual kindergarten is unmatched

Look at that face though. Kid is THRILLED to be in kindergarten, even if kindergarten is happening in our living room. Sophie’s being very mature about the whole thing, typing away like she’s running a Fortune 500 company. Meanwhile Theo asked his teacher if she could see his pet rock through the screen.

Marcus set up a whole “learning station” with proper lighting and everything. It lasted exactly one day before they migrated back to the couch with snacks. The couch is school now. The coffee table is their desk. Biscuit is the class pet. We’re all adjusting to our new normal, one Zoom call at a time.
