Ten years ago today, this little human made me a mama.

I keep staring at her trying to figure out when she went from my chubby-cheeked baby to this long-legged girl who borrows my lip gloss and has opinions about everything. She’s starting to look like me. She’s starting to ACT like me. Marcus is terrified. I’m thrilled.

We couldn’t do the big party we planned because, you know, global pandemic. But Elena Hartwell does not let a little thing like quarantine stop a celebration. I organized a drive-by birthday parade with her friends and their families. Sophie spent twenty minutes claiming she was ‘too embarrassed’ and then spent the next hour waving like the queen of England from our front steps.

She opened her gifts at the kitchen island this morning while Marcus and I pretended we weren’t getting emotional about our baby hitting double digits. She got art supplies, books, and a new guitar case because apparently my ten-year-old is cooler than I was at sixteen. Tonight we’re having her favorite dinner (spaghetti and meatballs, obviously) and watching whatever movie she picks. Being her mom is the best job I’ve ever had.

Happy birthday to my first baby, my little mini-me, my Sophie Grace. Ten looks good on you, mija.
