Five years ago today, at 3:47 AM after fourteen hours of labor, Sophie Grace made me a mom. Today she made me cry at her birthday cake.

I keep looking at her and seeing glimpses of the baby she was and the girl she’s becoming all at once. She no longer fits in my lap the way she used to, but she still tries anyway. I let her. I always will. The kindergarten countdown officially begins in two months and I’m not ready.

Theo slept through the entire party, which honestly was perfect because Sophie got to be the complete center of attention.

Make a wish, big girl.

She blew out all five candles in one breath and announced her wish was “to stay five forever.” Kid’s got the right idea.

Happy birthday to my girl who taught me that my heart could live outside my body and somehow still keep beating.
