A story that was never mine to know

Eight forty-five this morning. Jake had already left, I had my iced coffee, and the window above the breakfast bar was cracked about two inches because apparently that is the only way to get cross-ventilation in this apartment without turning the whole fan situation into a NATO summit. And then the neighbors started talking.

I couldn’t make out everything. Just enough. There was a parking spot involved. Or maybe a package that got delivered to the wrong door. Or possibly both, the two incidents seemed to have merged into a single grievance that had clearly been building for longer than just this morning. At one point someone said something in a very specific tone that I recognized immediately as the tone of a person who has been completely reasonable for weeks and has simply run out of reasons to continue being reasonable. I have used that tone. I respect that tone.

The thing is, I sat there for probably fifteen minutes nursing that coffee and doing absolutely nothing else. I wasn’t on my phone. I wasn’t thinking about the archive coordination calls I need to return this week, or the Fourth of July leftovers still taking up half the fridge, or whether the herb garden needs water. I was just fully, completely present for a conflict that had nothing to do with me. And I think that might be the most rested I’ve felt all month.

I don’t know how it ended. They went inside. The window does not provide resolution, only context. But I’ve been thinking about that particular tone all day, the one that means ‘I have held this very patiently and now I am done holding it’, and I think there’s something quietly instructive in hearing it come from a stranger. It sounds different when it’s not yours. More reasonable. Almost obvious. Anyway. The iced coffee was excellent and I have no regrets about how I spent my Wednesday morning.
